COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : USC : Referees’ Calls Draw Ire of Trojan Coaching Staff

Share

USC coaches were steamed Monday over several officials’ calls in the Stanford game.

They were most upset over a play on Stanford’s last possession, when it appeared a Stanford offensive player tackled USC defensive end Israel Ifeanyi as he tried to sack quarterback Mark Butterfield.

And some wondered why, on the failed Stanford pass that ended the game, one official was trying to spot the ball on the one-foot line.

It’s against Pac-10 rules for coaches to criticize game officials, but Coach John Robinson said, “We’re asking Pac-10 people to review some of the calls.”

USC’s new math: The Trojans (5-0-1) are in the Rose Bowl if they beat either Oregon State Saturday or UCLA on Nov. 18.

USC can miss by losing one and tying one, or losing twice while Washington (4-1-1) or Oregon (4-2) wins their final two.

USC also would be denied if it lost twice while Oregon won one and tied one.
