Canyon Springs’ 41-0 homecoming victory over Ramona was a somber one. Nate Cast, a co-captain of last year’s team that won the CIF Southern Section title, and Vic Phipps, an All-Ivy League baseball player last year, died in an auto accident 15 miles east of Ludlow. They were traveling from Arizona for homecoming. . . . The girls’ volleyball team at Riverside Poly won the Ivy League title with a 13-4 record after going 1-14 last year. Outside hitter Christie Wilson is the Bears’ top player. . . . Joel Ramos is the Bloomington boys’ cross-country team. He is the only runner on the “team” and placed third at the Sunkist League finals last week to qualify for the CIF preliminary meet at Mt. San Antonio College on Saturday. He covered the three-mile course at Norte Vista High in 16:49. . . . San Gorgonio’s water polo team won its sixth consecutive San Andreas League title. The Cardinals (21-6) are the only team from San Bernardino County to win a CIF championship, having done so in 1993. They are the top-seeded team in the Division V playoffs and have Kevin Balding, Jason Jaurigue, Alan Chzranowski and goalie Tom Gronewald back from the 1993 championship team. . . . Rebecca Heard won the individual title to lead Yucca Valley to the Skyline League girls’ cross-county championship. . . . Serrano freshman Christina Morgan won the De Anza League individual cross-country title in a time of 19:24 at Silver Valley High. Rocky Jordan of Aquinas won the De Anza League boys’ title with a time of 15:50. . . . Dustin Hawes and Lisa Lindberg of Alta Loma won the individual championships at the Mt. Baldy League finals last week. . . . Hesperia’s Jeremy Lyon won the Citrus Belt League title with a time of 15:18 at Hesperia.
