BUENA PARK — The Sunny Hills defense intercepted three passes and recovered two fumbles as the Lancers defeated La Habra, 30-7, in a Freeway League game Thursday night.
The Lancers (5-4-1, 4-1 in league) clinched second place and a playoff berth. La Habra ended the season 3-7, 1-4.
Two of the first three La Habra possessions ended on interceptions by Guy Porter and Sean Ellefson.
Ellefson’s interception led to the first of three touchdowns scored by Robert Oliver. With 10 minutes 18 seconds left in the second quarter, Oliver scored on a seven-yard rush for a 7-0 lead.
On the third play of the Highlanders’ next possession, Ellefson recovered a fumble that led to a three-yard touchdown run by Oliver. The extra-point attempt failed and Sunny Hills led, 13-0.
After Todd Weaver kicked a 40-yard field goal in the third quarter, Oliver scored his third touchdown, a four-yard run, to give Sunny Hills a 23-0 lead with 8:22 left in the game.
Adam Rodriguez intercepted a pass on La Habra’s next play, which eventually led to a 13-yard touchdown run by Chris Velotta and a 30-0 lead.
Oliver rushed for 127 yards in 24 carries. The Sunny Hills defense limited the Highlanders to 35 yards rushing in 18 carries.
