ROUNDUP : Ferguson Tries, but Royal Falls

Senior hitter LaKeesha DeBerry had seven kills and four blocks, and senior setter Heidi Ferguson, playing her final match for Royal High and her father, Coach Bob Ferguson, added 24 assists and three kills, but the Highlanders were swept out of the Southern Section Division I girls’ volleyball playoffs Thursday night by Sea View League champion Newport Harbor.

The scores were 15-6, 15-3, 16-14.

Dani Upmeyer and Carrie Swartz each had six kills, and Michelle Lampkin added four aces for visiting Royal (13-5), which finished in a four-way tie for the Marmonte League title.

In other first-round matches:

Harvard-Westlake d. Crescenta Valley, 15-2, 15-6, 15-2--The second-seeded Wolverines (13-1) coasted past the visiting Falcons in Division II. Lesley Coben had eight kills and six digs, and Christine Bohle had eight kills for Mission League champion Harvard-Westlake.

Saugus d. Marymount, 7-15, 15-9, 15-9, 15-5--Lauren McCartin had 13 kills and Jennifer Phillips had nine kills and four blocks for host Saugus (12-3) in Division II.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Newport Harbor 14, Thousand Oaks 4--The doubles team of Jelyn Lu and Leila Jarari won two of three sets to score half of the Lancers’ points in a first-round Division I playoff match at Thousand Oaks. The Lancers finished 14-5.

In other first-round matches:

Santa Margarita 10, Westlake 8--The host Warriors’ weakness finally caught up with them as they failed to win a doubles set, and Tracy Keyser stole a singles set from Erin Smith, 6-4, for the Eagles in Division I.

Harvard-Westlake 17, Rowland 1--The sixth-ranked Wolverines (17-3) breezed behind Lindsy Forbess, who won 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles in Division II at the Racquet Centre.

Crescenta Valley 17, Louisville 3--Yoko Matsumoto led the 10th-ranked Falcons (16-0) with 7-5, 6-0, 6-0 victories in Division II at Crescenta Valley.

Burroughs 15, Warren 3--Christian Irnico and Shaland Romero each recorded three singles victories for host Burroughs (15-3) in Division III.

Quartz Hill 11, La Quinta 7--Nicole Williford defeated Jenny Ha, 6-0, Anna Tran, 6-3, and Nancy Nguyen, 6-0, at No. 1 singles to lead host Quartz Hill (17-1) in Division IV.

Nordhoff 15, Gladstone 3--The Rangers (12-8) upset the Montview League champion Gladiators (16-4) behind the singles play of Stacey Roberts and Brianne Chapman, who dropped only five games in sweeping three sets each in Division V at Gladstone.

HIGH SCHOOL WATER POLO

Harvard-Westlake 10, Corona del Mar 6--J.J. Arden had four goals and Vahe Aharonian had 10 saves for the host Wolverines (20-6) in a Southern Section Division I first-round playoff victory.

In other first-round matches:

Burroughs 7, Beverly Hills 6--Goalie Mike Denny led the visiting Indians (18-6) to an upset overtime victory with 25 saves, including five in the fourth quarter and four in overtime in Division III.

Alfonso Tucay scored three goals as the Indians won their first-ever playoff game.

Crescenta Valley 17, Santa Monica 9--Jon Conrad scored seven goals for host Crescenta Valley (23-3) in Division III.

Royal 21, Calabasas 2--The top-seeded Highlanders played without leading scorer Bill Bruininga, but got four goals from Zack Finley as they routed the Coyotes in Division IV at the Rancho Simi Community Park pool.

MEN’S SOCCER

Santa Barbara 4, Mission 3--Kris Swanson, Emanuel Martin and Brian Murray had goals for the host Free Spirit (8-3-5, 3-3-3) in a Western State Conference match.

Sorenson Fleming had three goals for the Vaqueros (14-1-1, 8-0-1), ranked first in the state.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Moorpark 1, Santa Barbara 0--Desiree Vaudreuil scored at the 40-minute mark in the first half off a pass from Debbie Smith, to put the Raiders (10-2-2, 5-1-2) in first place in the Western State Conference with two games remaining.
