Steve Jurgenson of Newport Beach shot a 71 in windy conditions in Kingwood, Tex., to win the second stage of the PGA Qualifying Tournament with a five-under 283 total. He was one of 24 players from six such tournaments to advance to the final stage of qualifying, which will be held Nov. 29-Dec. 4 in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Tennis
UCLA’s Keri Phebus, the nation’s top-ranked college player, advanced to the semifinals of the Southern California Women’s Tennis Regionals at UCI. Phebus defeated seventh-seeded Suzie Italiano of USC in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-3. Phebus, from Corona del Mar, will face UC Santa Barbara’s Jean Okada in the semifinals at 10 a.m. today.
