Ojai Resident to Run Against Gallegly

A 72-year-old retired high school teacher from Ojai announced Monday that he will challenge Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley) in his reelection bid.

Democrat Robert Unruhe is the only candidate to oppose Gallegly in the March 26 election. Gallegly’s 23rd Congressional District covers all of Ventura County, except for most of the Conejo Valley.

Unruhe dismissed any notion that his age may make voters hesitate to support him. “Bob Dole is 72,” he said.

Unruhe said he entered the race because he believes Gallegly and the Republican-dominated Congress are out of touch with most of America. He said he was most concerned about congressional proposals to reduce spending on government health insurance for the elderly and the needy.

“They have been picking on children, poor people and now they want to pick on senior citizens,” he said.

A former high school teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School District, Unruhe said he has lived in Ventura County for the last 12 years. He said he formerly served on the City Council of Culver City from 1956 to 1960 and 1962 to 1966.
