An Orange County judge pro tem was shot and seriously wounded Monday night after he parked his Cadillac outside his home, police said.

Charles Salovesh, 59, was in surgery late Monday at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana for multiple bullet wounds suffered during the attack, Orange Police Lt. Timm Browne said.

Investigators said the motive for the attack was unlcear late Monday.

Salovesh is an attorney who serves as a judge pro tem, or part-time judge, at Municipal Court in Fullerton, Browne said. He previously served as a deputy in the Orange County marshal’s office and also worked as an Anaheim deputy city attorney in the mid-1980s.

Salovesh was shot by one or more assailants at 8:55 p.m. after parking his car near his condominium in the 700 block of East Lake Drive, Lt. Browne said.

Salovesh is among a number of attorneys who sit as judges pro tem across the county. These lawyers handle routine hearings, often in family law matters, to ease the caseloads of full-time judges and commissioners.
