Christa Saindon, an All-American shortstop at Cypress College and a starter on the U.S. junior girls’ world team last summer, has signed to play softball at Cal State Northridge.

Northridge also signed Elizabeth Sanches, an All-Southern Section outfielder from Lakewood High.

Saindon turned down offers from Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Cal State Fullerton and Nevada Las Vegas. She hit .326 and set a school record with 42 runs batted in last spring at Cypress.

Also signed by the Matadors were two players from Sacramento City College: Laura Redding, a second team All-American infielder who hit .397, and right-handed pitcher Cheri Shinn, who earned All-State honors with a record of 20-2 and an earned-run average of 0.48.

The eligibility of Trymon Redick, an all-purpose back at Antelope Valley High, has been restored for Friday’s Southern Section playoff game against Pasadena. A senior who has scored eight touchdowns for the top-seeded team in the Division II playoffs, Redick had been declared academically ineligible Monday.

But his uncle, Bill Redick, said a teacher was late reporting an improved grade based on makeup work. The grade was changed Tuesday, making the player eligible.

Coach Brent Newcomb said two reserve players, receiver Anthony Williams and lineman Michael McNeal, also had their eligibility restored.
