Five Cars Destroyed, 15 Damaged in Fire
Four families were evacuated Thursday night after several cars caught fire in an apartment parking lot, police said.
The fire destroyed five cars and damaged about 15 more at the Cinnamon Ridge Apartments in the 1300 block of North Gilbert Street, Police Lt. Tony Hernandez said.
A resident in an adjacent complex called the Fire Department about 2 a.m. after he heard a crackling noise and saw a glow of flames in the Cinnamon Ridge carport.
When firefighters arrived they found several cars engulfed in flames. They controlled the fire in 25 minutes.
Investigators later determined that the fire apparently began in an engine compartment of a pickup truck parked in the carport. The fire remains under investigation, but arson is not suspected.
