Edison, wild-card entry in Division I, had its postseason hopes dashed by Long Beach Poly, which won, 40-14, in a first-round game Friday night a Long Beach Wilson High.

Quarterback Morris Smith passed for two touchdowns and ran for another as the second-seeded Jackrabbits (11-0) advanced to the second round, where they will play Capistrano Valley.

Smith scored two quick touchdowns early in the second half to put the game away.

On the third play from scrimmage, Smith eluded a heavy rush, then scrambled for a 64-yard touchdown run. Two minutes later, Smith hit wide receiver Ken-yon Rambo with a nine-yard slant pass. Rambo outran the defenders to complete a 78-yard touchdown play as the Moore League champions took a 34-7 lead at 7 minutes 25 seconds of the third quarter.

Edison (6-5) got off to a promising start. The Chargers scored the first touchdown in only four plays--all runs by Alex Forero, who capped the drive with a nine-yard touchdown run.

Forero closed out his Edison career with a flourish, rushing for 202 yards in 22 carries, giving him 1,393 yards this season.

Vince Catani scored Edison’s other touchdown on a 56-yard run off a fake punt in the fourth quarter.

The Chargers gained 280 yards on the ground and 45 through the air.

Poly’s star running back and linebacker, Akka-Ar Moses, injured his left leg on the Jackrabbits’ first defensive series.
