SCOREBOARD: How did The Times Valley Edition’s Top 10 high school football teams fare in the first round of the playoffs? So far, so good. Eight of the 10 ranked teams advanced to the second round. . . . Quarterback Jason Zdenek, above, will lead one of them, Chaminade High of West Hills, against Nogales on Friday night in the second round of the Southern Section playoffs. Six Valley City Section teams will play Wednesday night.

ON LINE: The five Los Angeles police divisions in the Valley are in for their share of the booty raised by the Mayor’s Alliance for a Safer L.A. This weekend, computers will be installed at Foothill Division, says Kimberly King, manager of the fund-raising campaign. If all goes as planned, the Van Nuys Division will go on line Jan. 22, North Hollywood on April 15 and Devonshire on May 13, King said. The West Valley Division was the first LAPD station outfitted last March.

FRESH AIR: Charles Adams, founder of Chatsworth-based Chad Therapeutics, understands fighting with Medicare. He spent years trying to save the system money--and earn some--with a gadget for conserving oxygen for lung patients. It didn’t sell because fat Medicare payments gave dealers no incentive to save. But fierce lobbying prevailed. “I had no idea of what it would take to change the bureaucracy,” he said (D9A).

SELLER BEWARE: So you bought a little place in Val Verde or Bouquet Canyon 10 years ago from a “Home Improvement” type. He thought only sissies bothered with building permits. . . . Now you want to sell. If a new plan proposed for unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County is approved, beware. You could have to pass an inspection first and undo any illegal improvements. Details in the weekly Real Estate column (D9A).
