They’ll Kill Stray Dogs With Injections, Not Bullets

Bad publicity and death threats have prompted a county to stop killing stray dogs with bullets and instead use injections.

Bullitt County had been shooting strays for 20 years, as have other counties in the state. Officials defend it as cheaper than gas or injections.

But Bullitt County Judge-Executive John Harper said Tuesday that negative reaction to news stories this month about the policy and death threats left on his telephone answering machine compelled him to order the change.

Harper, head of county government in this town about 30 miles south of Louisville, said the county’s Humane Society and a new group formed by local veterinarians will cover the cost of injections.
