His ‘Crossfire’ Nominee: Jane Fonda

Somebody ought to let Howard Rosenberg know that, although he’s to be admired for wanting a true representative of the left on CNN’s “Crossfire,” (“Help Wanted: TV Show Seeks Avowed Lefty,” Calendar, Nov. 22) there is almost no such thing as left-wing in the U.S. these days. I’d suggest that Jerry Brown would theoretically fill the bill, but not only would he be unlikely to accept an offer to co-host such a non-Socratic shouting-match, he wouldn’t even be desired by the show’s producers as anything more than a rare guest.

Since Rosenberg would optimally prefer that a left-wing woman take Michael Kinsley’s spot, how about suggesting to CNN mogul Ted Turner that he release his wife, Jane Fonda, from her current life of luxury for an hour per day to resurrect her past and take Kinsley’s place? If Rosenberg cringes at the mere suggestion, it only proves the point that there is virtually no “true” left in America, only a “relative” left of Pat Buchanan’s extreme right. That being the case, I’ll be a grudging realist and suggest that Barbara Boxer, Dianne Feinstein and Patricia Schroeder alternately volunteer for this “noble” duty while dealing with their congressional responsibilities. They might welcome such an opportunity to vent their frustrations, given the realities of dealing with the Gringrichs and Doles on a daily basis.
