INSIDE & OUT : Reflections

Share

International designer Dick Dumas has found his place in the sun.

His Mirrored Applique sconce can light the way and bring a little touch of France to any room.

A resident of France for more than 30 years, Dumas, who has won numerous international design awards, creates pieces for the exteriors and interiors of large private estates throughout the country.

Upon moving from Paris to Provence, Dumas got a taste for outdoor living, and the lifestyle has been his inspiration for the sconce and several other pieces in the Sun House collection.

The sconce is made of iron and strategically placed pieces of mirror that give the candle’s reflection the look of sun rays. It is available in two sizes (12-inch diameter, about $700; 19-inch, about $1,060), through Dumas’ New York-based company, Profiles.

Through the Mill

Take a break from the usual grind with salt and pepper mills from Bodum of Racine, Wis.

Specialists in making spice grinders and mills, Bodum woodworkers combine beechwood or teak with forged steel mechanisms to create something beyond the ordinary.

The contours are designed not only for aesthetics, but also for comfort. The Peugeot grinding mechanisms ensure a lifetime of trouble-free cranking.

In addition, Bodum has a collection of acrylic shakers and mills for more casual settings.

Prices range from $20 for the acrylic Peppino mills to $50 for Long Tall Sally and $64 for Fleur. For information and nearest dealer, (800) 232-6386.

Lockbox

Robern Inc. takes bathroom safety one step further--lock, stock and barrel.

Designed to store bottles and pills, the safety lock box of anodized aluminum ($79) can replace a shelf in one of the company’s new or existing medicine cabinets.

The lockbox, which comes with two keys, is available at the Bath Co. in Mission Viejo and Eurobath & Tile in Costa Mesa.
