COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine Defeats Stanford in Water Polo

Goalkeeper Tom Davis stopped 12 shots to lead second-seeded UC Irvine to a 4-2 victory over two-time defending champion Stanford in the quarterfinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo tournament Friday at Newport Harbor High School.

The Anteaters (16-6), ranked fourth in the nation, led, 2-1, after three quarters, but scored twice in the fourth.

Ryan Bailey scored two goals and Matt Maunz and Jean Michel added one each for Irvine. The Anteaters will meet California in the semifinals at 2:30 p.m. today.

In other Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo games:

Cal 14, Long Beach State 8--The 49ers trailed by one at halftime, but were outscored, 8-3, in the second half by Cal.

In the Chapman men’s basketball tournament:

Chapman 99, LIFE Bible 75--Jim Falletta had 17 points and seven rebounds for Chapman. The Panthers (2-0) led 44-41, at halftime before outscoring LIFE Bible 55-34, in the the second half. Pete Sverkos added 12 points and Todd Canavan 10 for Chapman. Mike Dobes led LIFE Bible (2-3) with 35 points and 13 rebounds.

In the Long Beach Baden Blowout women’s volleyball tournament:

Long Beach State 3, Pittsburgh 0--Brita Schwerm had 30 kills and 18 digs as Long Beach State won, 18-16, 15-15, 15-8. The 49ers jumped out to a 8-3 lead in game one, before falling behind 14-11. Schwerm, who had nine kills in game one, tied the score at 15-15 with an ace, helping Long Beach hold on for the victory.

Long Beach State 3, Rice 0--Sophomore Nique Crump had 11 kills and freshman Misty May 23 assists to lead Long Beach State to a 15-9, 15-0, 15-1 victory. Rice is 19-13.
