SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

David Jones gained 167 yards in 25 carries and set a school single-season rushing record, but Flintridge Prep lost to Brentwood, 41-21, Saturday in the Southern Section’s Eight-Man Large Schools Division championship game at Brentwood.

Flintridge Prep was making its first--and last--appearance in an Eight-Man championship game since winning the title in 1989. The Rebels move up to 11-man football in the Division XI Prep League next season.

Jones, who played with a sprained knee suffered in a playoff game last week, set a season record with 1,887 yards rushing.

Flintridge Prep (9-2) entered the final riding a five-game winning streak since a 48-40 loss to Brentwood.

Although the Rebels took an early lead on a 54-yard touchdown pass play from Brian Christian to Ben Lee in the first two minutes of the game, Flintridge Prep was stifled until the game was out of reach.

After being shut out in the first quarter, Brentwood (12-0) responded to Flintridge Prep’s early score with 35 consecutive points. The Rebels finally broke through on a three-yard touchdown run by Christian with 7 minutes 46 seconds to play.

“It was a big disappointment today,” Jones said. “We thought we could beat them. But, overall, the team went really far.”

Christian completed 12 of 16 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown with one interception. Lee finished with three receptions for 80 yards, and tight end Chris Bowns made four catches for 43 yards.

Brentwood’s Rico Saken rushed for 278 yards and three touchdowns, and Scott Fagan had 69 yards and three scores.
