Last season Duke was 13-18, the most losses in the school’s history. The Blue Devils won only two Atlantic Coast Conference games, another low. They also lost their coach for the last 19 games because of a bad back.

But with its second victory over a ranked team in as many nights, Duke served notice that it is back. The Blue Devils defeated No. 10 Iowa Saturday night, 88-81, to win the Great Alaska Shootout at Anchorage, a day after defeating 23rd-ranked Indiana, 70-64.

“I don’t think I’ve had a team play any harder in [the final] eight minutes than they did tonight,” Coach Mike Krzyzewski said. “I had a couple of kids crying in there, and they’re crying for good reasons.”

Duke used its fastbreak and clutch three-point shooting to outlast the Hawkeyes. Chris Collins scored 30 points and made five three-point baskets. Ricky Price scored 25 points for the Blue Devils, who opened the season unranked.

Iowa appeared on its way to victory when Jess Settles drove for a basket, stole the inbounds pass and scored again while being fouled. His free throw gave Iowa a 69-58 lead, its biggest, with 6:58 remaining.

But Collins scored six points in the next three minutes and Duke outscored Iowa, 10-1, to tie the score at 70-70 with 4:04 left. Steve Wojciechowski’s three-point shot with 2:45 left gave Duke a 74-71 lead, one it kept the rest of the game.

“I thought we’d fought through the worst part, and then Duke just took it back from us,” Hawkeye Coach Tom Davis said. “I think they played about as well as they were capable of playing.”

Duke shot 58% from the floor to Iowa’s 43% and the Blue Devils made nine of 20 three-point attempts. Iowa made only four of its 20 three-point shots.

Auburn 82, No. 13 Louisville 78--The Tigers erased an 18-point deficit midway through the second half and held the Cardinals to five points over the final 5:29 in the championship game of the Puerto Rico Shootout at Bayamon.

Lance Weems and Derek Caldwell scored 11 consecutive points to give the Tigers (3-0) a 74-73 lead with 2:43 left. Weems’ three-point basket with 1:42 to play gave them a 77-73 lead.

Louisville (2-1) closed within two, but Weems and Burke followed with four consecutive free throws to extend the lead to six with 20 seconds left.
