Germany’s Lando Wins $3.9-Million Japan Cup
German-bred Lando pulled away in the stretch to win the $3.9-million Japan Cup on Sunday, ending a three-year string of victories by the host country.
The 5-year-old Lando, ridden by Michael Roberts, won by 1 1/2 lengths over Hishi Amazon of Japan before a record crowd of 180,760 at Tokyo Race Course. Hernando was third.
Lando, the first German horse to win in the race’s 15-year history, covered the 1 1/2-mile turf course in 2:24 3/5. The victory was worth about $1.7 million.
The favored Narita Brian of Japan was sixth. Sandpit, the third favorite, settled for eighth.
