South Bay : Supervisors Set Fiscal Goal for Easing of Hiring Freeze

Share

The big chill may be over soon for would-be county beach workers.

The Board of Supervisors has decided that a hiring freeze on the Beaches and Harbor Department could be relaxed within a month if the department meets a targeted savings level of $113,000.

Supervisor Deane Dana, who represents the South Bay, backed a proposal that would have lifted the countywide freeze and allowed the department to fill 10 maintenance and grounds-keeping positions. But instead, Chief Administrative Officer Sally Reed set a target savings level that each department must meet before new hires can be made.

Each department would have to meet its savings goal or have a plan that shows how the goal will be met by the end of the fiscal year June 30. The earliest hires would be made after Jan. 18, when the supervisors will re-evaluate the department proposals.
