Authorities evacuated more than 200 employees and customers from a Thousand Oaks Kmart on Friday morning after a truck pulling a 53-foot-long trailer broke a gas main while attempting to back up to the discount store’s loading dock.
No one was hurt and Ventura County firefighters stopped the gas from leaking about 25 minutes after the 11:30 a.m. accident at the discount store on Hampshire Road, a Fire Department spokesman said.
“They stopped it, [The Gas Co.] checked for fumes in the store, and we were able to let everyone back in within the hour,” store manager Jay Jones said.
A door on the trailer snapped a gas pipe near the store’s receiving dock, he said.
