A man was shot and killed early Saturday after shooting another man during an attempted robbery, police said.

Jose Rodriguez, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene of the shootings, which took place shortly after midnight in the carport of an apartment complex at 1810 S. Broadway, police said.

Salbio Castellon, whose age and address were not immediately available, was admitted to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the upper torso, officials said. He was in serious condition late Saturday, police said.

Santa Ana Police Sgt. Jim McDaniel said investigators have identified Rodriguez as a gang member, although he said he could not immediately provide evidence of Rodriguez’s gang involvement.

Authorities think Rodriguez approached Castellon as he and other men were drinking beer in the carport and tried to rob the men at gunpoint.

Rodriguez allegedly fired on Castellon as he tried to stop the robbery. An unidentified man at the scene then fired on Rodriguez, officials believe.

Two handguns were found at the scene but no arrests have been made, McDaniel said.
