A man who police believe fled because he had drugs in his car died Friday night after crashing his car during a chase from Costa Mesa to Anaheim, officials said Saturday.

Costa Mesa police said they tried to stop Jeffrey Lloyd Novak, 39, of Fullerton about 10:30 p.m. after a license check revealed he was wanted for several vehicle code violations, including speeding, running a red light and reckless driving.

After refusing to pull over, Novak fled onto the Orange Freeway into Anaheim, police said.

Novak exited the freeway at Lincoln Avenue and sped through a residential neighborhood before losing control of his car and crashing near the intersection of South Rio Vista and Frontera streets, said Lt. Alan Kent of the Costa Mesa Police Department.
