THEATER REVIEWS : A Darker Story Enriches Dickens

Share

When Charles Dickens wrote “A Christmas Carol,” he wasn’t writing a children’s story. Most dramatizations ignore this in favor of pure entertainment. But Jerry Patch’s version at South Coast Repertory vividly honors Dickens’ intent and delivers bang-up entertainment.

To its immense advantage, the production has grown darker since its early years, which makes it richer for adults, and has developed its special effects with panache, a boon for both kids and their elders. The darkness doesn’t put any strain on younger viewers.

The production moves with the pacing of a film, with no pause for a breath. The detailed costumes and lighting are painterly, and exceptionally lush and textured.

John-David Keller, who directed and plays Christmas Past, balances the tones and rhythms of Patch’s script with affection and a sense of clarity. Hal Landon Jr., who has played Scrooge for all of the production’s 16 years, creates a portrait of honesty and truth, and the supporting cast is fine.
