Eligibility Runs Out for Cleveland’s Hoggatts

Share

Cleveland High guard Tony Hoggatts, a transfer from Faith Baptist who scored 30 points in Cleveland’s 86-56 season-opening victory over Monroe last Wednesday, was declared ineligible later in the week and missed the Cavaliers’ game against Poly on Friday.

Hoggatts’ eight semesters of eligibility expired after last season. He played as a sophomore in 1992-93 and part of his junior season in 1993-94 before leaving Faith Baptist.

Coach Kevin Crider said that Hoggatts, who last month signed a letter of intent with Portland State, will appeal later this month to the City Section for a hardship waiver.

If the appeal is denied, the Cavaliers would be forced to forfeit the victory over Monroe.

The section’s Rules Committee last week turned down a similar appeal by Cleveland’s Akua Floyd, a senior forward who was seeking an extra semester of eligibility.

Chatsworth High guard T.J. McCoy, who was held out of the team’s opener against Poly last week, will miss today’s game against Canoga Park and likely will miss the rest of the season, Coach Fluke Fluker said.

McCoy, a 6-3 senior and returning starter, was under investigation by the school for allegedly falsifying a physical examination report.
