BREA : Voters Will Decide on Status of 2 City Posts
- Share via
The city will hold a special election March 26 to allow residents to decide whether the city treasurer and city clerk should be appointive positions rather than elected.
City officials began studying the idea last month after John Sutton, Brea’s longtime elected treasurer, approached the City Council and suggested that the position be appointive.
An appointed treasurer would be more accountable to the council, Sutton said, and would be required to have a certain amount of education and training. In addition, he said, during the last few years, the city’s paid financial staff has taken over many of the duties of the treasurer.
The council voted 4 to 0 Tuesday to put the issue before residents. Councilwoman Kathryn E. Wiser was absent.
