BREA : Dunlap Takes Gavel; Perry Gets Praise
Councilman Burnie Dunlap has been selected without opposition as the city’s new mayor.
Dunlap, 52, takes over the top spot from Councilwoman Bev Perry, who was widely praised by City Council members for her past year’s efforts.
Dunlap presented a computer tally of all the Brea-related meetings Perry attended during the past year--a whopping 486.
To illustrate his point, Dunlap held up the pages of the printout, which stretched about 15 feet across the floor.
“It’s a record that I have no desire to beat,” Dunlap quipped.
During her tenure, Perry’s theme was “Investing in Brea’s Youth.” Overall, she presented 56 awards to young people who were active in the community, officials said.
Dunlap, who is the director of insurance services at Brea Community Hospital, said he has not yet selected a theme or set specific goals for his year as mayor. He said he will do so after consulting with colleagues and friends.
Dunlap was first elected to the council in 1990 and was mayor once before, in 1993.
