END OF AN ERA: DONAHUE RESIGNS : OH, WHAT HE MEANT TO SAY WAS ONLY GOOD THING IS BEATING THEM
Donahue always was a little more tightly wound in games against USC, probably because he had such a poor record against the Trojans early in his career.
The week before the 1986 UCLA-USC game, I wrote a story that quoted the Bruins’ Ken Norton as saying, “The only good thing about USC is the band.”
Norton’s humor was lost on Donahue, who hit the roof. He called me to his office to lay me out for the story.
“You’ve robbed me of whatever edge we may have had in this game,” Donahue said.
Not exactly.
Final score: UCLA 45, USC 25.
If the TV gig doesn’t work out, Donahue could shoot for music critic.
