END OF AN ERA: DONAHUE RESIGNS : COACHING IS A RACKET, TOO

I went to Westwood one time to play tennis with Donahue. We had talked about it many times, but never got our jobs synchronized enough to get it done.
We played, enjoyed ourselves, got to know more about each other’s families and even took time for a leisurely lunch afterward.
But throughout, even though he did just fine, I sensed that Donahue, once a top athlete on the football field, was very nervous about the tennis game.
Years later, though, he recovered well when the subject came up.
“I was so nervous that day, because I’d heard you were a great player,” he said. “But once I saw that wasn’t true, I was fine.”
