City Won’t Move Fair Despite Stores’ Protests

Despite complaints from merchants that it hurts their businesses, the annual I Love La Habra Fair will take place on La Habra Boulevard.

The business owners could not persuade the City Council last week to move the fair to another location.

Organizers staged the fair on Euclid Street last year, but that site was rejected this year because residents had complained about parking problems.

The council said the fair, which will take place Feb. 9-11, promotes pride in the city, brings shoppers to the downtown area and helps local charities raise money.

But some merchants say it keeps regular customers away.

Jackie Fogel, who owns MacKinnon’s Stationery store on La Habra Boulevard, said closing part of the street for the fair makes it inconvenient for her customers on the busiest weekend of the year--just before Valentine’s Day.

To allay her concerns, city officials said they will provide large signs bearing the name of Fogel’s business, and traffic will be directed to alternate parking for her store.
