About 900,000 cigarette lighters should be returned to the stores where they were bought because they lack safety devices to keep children from igniting them, the government said Thursday.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission also said it is recalling 26,000 nylon hammocks and 31,400 wooden bunk beds because children could become trapped in them and possibly strangle.

Young’s Assn. of Gardena imported the lighters from Hong Kong and distributed them for sale from June through September at convenience stores and gas stations in California and nearly a dozen other states.

The metal caps of the lighters were stamped with “CiG” and “Snaploc.”

The commission said consumers should stop using the lighters immediately and contact Young’s at (800) 654-0132 for refund information.

Mini-hammocks made by Consolidated Stores Corp. of Columbus, Ohio, do not have spreader bars to hold them open, which could be troublesome for children trying to climb in or out of them, the commission said. The hammocks measure 7 feet by 20 feet and have nylon ropes at each end.

Consumers should stop using the hammocks and return them for a full refund to the Big Lots & Odd Lots stores where they were sold nationwide in 1990 and ’91. They can also contact Consolidated Stores at (800) 877-1253.

Three manufacturers and importers are recalling the bunk beds because openings in the top bunk are large enough for children’s bodies, but not their heads, to pass through, the commission said. Consumers should stop using the beds and contact the appropriate maker for more information. The makers and beds involved are:

* Quality Craft Inc. of National City, Calif.; model numbers P4279, P4280, P4281, P4488, P5881 and P4177; distributed before July 1995.

* Royce Corp. of Dandridge, Tenn.; model numbers 60-060 (formerly 4105) and 60-160 (formerly 4805); distributed between 1990 and ’94.
