Plans for a new 600- to 800-unit self-storage center in Newbury Park will move forward with the Thousand Oaks Planning Commission’s blessing.

Commissioners this week approved a proposal to build the 71,400-square-foot facility on Newbury Road, west of Ventu Park Road. Walter Moorhead, who proposed the facility, said it could open by the end of next summer.

The center would include five buildings, four containing self-storage units. The storage units would range from 5 feet by 5 feet, to 10 feet by 30 feet.

The fifth building, fronting Newbury Road, would contain space for four retail shops. Moorhead said he hopes to fill the spaces with neighborhood-oriented stores, such as a dry cleaners or a sandwich shop.
