South Bay : CLEAN BUSES
In an effort to reduce air pollution, Los Angeles International Airport purchased seven shuttle buses and three airfield buses powered by liquefied natural gas.
A $600,000 grant from the South Coast Air Quality Management District will help cover the difference in cost between diesel-fueled buses and the more expensive vehicles that run on natural gas.
“Even though the diesel-powered buses may be cheaper, in the long run, it’s not good for the air,” Department of Airports spokeswoman Cora Fossett said. “We want to do everything we can to make the air cleaner, and this is one way.”
Fossett said the airport expects to begin using the vehicles early next year. Then, the fleet of natural gas-powered shuttle buses will increase from 14 to 21.
