NBA ROUNDUP : McCloud Ties Mark, Can’t Detect Victory

Charles Barkley scored the Suns’ first five points in overtime as Phoenix defeated the Dallas Mavericks, 111-108, Saturday night in Dallas despite a record-tying 10 three-point baskets by George McCloud.

Barkley scored 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Phoenix won its 14th consecutive game over Dallas, which has lost 13 of 15 overall.

McCloud’s three-point shot with 1:03 remaining in overtime put Dallas ahead, 108-107, but Elliot Perry’s 16-foot jump shot from the left corner with 7.7 seconds left gave Phoenix a 109-108 lead.

Dallas point guard Jason Kidd slipped and fell on a drive with 3.0 seconds remaining, losing the ball out of bounds. Kidd was carried to the locker room with an apparent hip injury. Perry then converted two free throws with 0.9 seconds left in overtime for a 111-108 lead.

McCloud matched the record held by Brian Shaw and Joe Dumars.

John Williams, the Suns’ starting center, left in the first quarter after spraining his right knee.

Utah 83, Miami 74--Karl Malone scored 30 points at Miami and moved past Larry Bird into 14th place on the career scoring list.

Miami, held to less than 100 points for the fifth consecutive game, was missing injured starters Alonzo Mourning, Billy Owens and Sasha Danilovich, who combine for an average of 54 points.

Malone also grabbed eight rebounds and blocked four shots for Utah, which allowed its fewest points this season.

Utah, on a six-game trip that began Friday, took control in the fourth quarter. The Jazz led, 56-53, entering the quarter and went on a 9-1 run.

San Antonio 122, Sacramento 106--Sean Elliott scored 31 points and David Robinson added 30 and grabbed 11 rebounds at San Antonio.

Mitch Richmond led the Kings with 23 points and Tyus Edney added 20.

Wil Perdue tied a career high with 15 rebounds for the Spurs. He had six offensive rebounds in the first quarter, tying the team record set by Robinson.

The Spurs led by at least 10 points for most of the second half. They broke away at the end as Robinson scored 11 points in the fourth quarter despite playing with four fouls.

Golden State 116, Vancouver 85--So much for Vancouver’s winning streak.

A night after stopping their 19-game losing streak--a record for an expansion team--the Grizzlies were routed at Vancouver.

Vancouver (3-20) took a 6-0 lead but then fell flat. Golden State, which outrebounded the Grizzlies, 48-29, led, 28-22, after 12 minutes, by 18 points midway through the second quarter and 57-43 at halftime.

Latrell Sprewell scored 22 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had eight assists to lead Golden State. Chris Mullin scored 18 points in 24 minutes, making seven of 10 shots.

Joe Smith had 15 points, 12 in the second half. Rony Seikaly scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

New York 86, Detroit 82--Patrick Ewing had 21 points, including a key 18-foot jump shot with 40.5 seconds remaining, and 12 rebounds at New York.

Ewing’s shot gave the Knicks a five-point lead as they held on to win for the fourth time in five games despite missing two of four free throws in the final 14 seconds.

Detroit, which has lost three of four, held New York to 46% shooting and only one field goal in the final two minutes but couldn’t overcome its poor shooting. The Pistons missed 14 of their first 15 shots and scored nine points in the first quarter.

Atlanta 95, Denver 86--Mookie Blaylock scored 11 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter and the Hawks scored nine unanswered points in the final 1:38 at Atlanta.

With the score tied, 86-86, Stacey Augmon made one of two free throws with 1:38 left. Andrew Lang made a hook with 1:14 remaining and Steve Smith made a free throw with 49 seconds left. Blaylock connected on a three-point shot with 28.8 seconds remaining.

Smith made two free throws with 19 seconds to go. During the run, the Nuggets missed five shots and twice turned over the ball.
