Joe Sakic scored twice on the power play and Peter Forsberg had three assists Wednesday night as the Colorado Avalanche beat the Oilers, 4-1, in Edmonton.

Sakic sparked the potent Avalanche power play--which entered the game ranked No. 2 in the league--when he scored his first of two man-advantage goals at 7:36 of the second period to break a 1-1 tie. Winning goaltender Patrick Roy made 28 saves.

Calgary 3, Hartford 2--Zarley Zalapski had a goal and an assist against his former team, leading Calgary to the win in front of the smallest announced crowd in Whaler history.

Only 6,563 attended the game at the Hartford Civic Centre after more than a foot of snow had fallen in the past two days. The previous low was 7,232 on Nov. 10, 1993, against Ottawa. Only 1,362 attended the March 3, 1993, game against Buffalo because of a blizzard, but 10,011 tickets had been sold.

Buffalo 2, Montreal 1--Pat LaFontaine scored two goals and backup goaltender Andrei Trefilov made 37 saves at Buffalo.

The Sabres were outshot, 17-2, in the final period, but Trefilov, filling in for injured Dominik Hasek, made several big saves to deny Montreal.

Chicago 4, Toronto 2--Tony Amonte scored twice for the Blackhawks in their win at Toronto.
