Wooing Retailers at Taxpayer Expense

Share

* The voters of Ventura and Oxnard really need to examine the goings-on of their city halls. A year ago the plea went out to vote for the half-cent sales-tax increase to protect us from the L.A. gangs.

Now the leaders of these two cities are trying to outdo each other with a great welfare giveaway to big retailing corporations, in the hopes of swaying where they put their stores.

The result of this is that the long-suffering middle-class taxpayer, who is the one that gets bitten every time, will get bitten again. Why? Because the two cities make up a single shopping area. The amount of sales taxes collected will remain the same overall. Which means the pot of sales taxes will not go up, except at the expense of the other city.
