The victim of a fatal shooting in Oxnard two days ago has been identified as Josue Carrera, a 21-year-old man who was found slumped and bleeding in the middle of West Hemlock Street, coroner’s officials said Wednesday.

Oxnard investigators spent much of Wednesday knocking on doors and talking with residents of the south Oxnard neighborhood. But by late afternoon, they had turned up little, police spokesman David Keith said.

“We’re talking to his family, were talking to his friends, but at this point there have been no witnesses that have come forward,” Keith said. “At this point we have no leads and we’re asking for the public’s help.”

Emergency dispatchers received a 911 call about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, warning that a shooting had just occurred in the 600 block of West Hemlock Street. Carrera was already dead when police and fire crews arrived, Keith said.

The shooting may be gang-related, based on interviews with family members, Keith said. No motive, however, has been uncovered.

Carrera was shot with an unknown type of firearm, and died from a single wound to the upper chest, Senior Deputy Coroner Jim Wingate said Wednesday.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call 385-TALK or 385-7763.
