CORONA DEL MAR — Two children playing with a candle Wednesday afternoon started a bedroom fire that caused an estimated $500,000 in damage, fire officials said.
About 5:15 p.m., Donald McNalley heard his two children screaming in a rear upstairs bedroom of their home in the 200 block of Marguerite Avenue and found the room engulfed in smoke and flames, Newport Beach Fire spokesman Augie Wagner said.
“All he could do was grab the children and get out,” Wagner said. “He had his wife call 911.”
About 40 firefighters controlled the fire in 25 minutes, the department said.
