Downfall of ‘Update’
Your article on “Saturday Night Live’s” Norm MacDonald (“It’s Why They’re Called Punch Lines,” Calendar, Dec. 23) explains a lot about why the “Weekend Update” segment is at its all-time weakest. By his own admission, MacDonald follows neither the news nor politics. Unlike Kevin Nealon and Dennis Miller who preceded him as “Update” anchors, MacDonald’s targets are invariably gays, females and the overweight. He also has the annoying habit of repeating jokes from week to week when they weren’t funny the first time.
“Weekend Update” had always been the one reliably humorous part of “SNL.” Now, sadly, it is as bad as the rest of the show.
