Nomo Was a Big Story Here, but the Big Sports Story in Japan
The rookie season of Dodger pitcher Hideo Nomo has been selected as the “Top Sports Story of the Year” in Japan by both the Daily Yomiuri newspaper and Kyodo News Service, the Japanese wire service.
Nomo, 27, was selected as the National League rookie of the year, the fourth Dodger in a row to get the honor.
Nomo had a 13-6 record with a 2.54 earned-run average and led the National League with 236 strikeouts. In addition, he led the majors by holding opponents to a .182 average, and was the NL starter in the All-Star game, pitching two scoreless innings.
Nomo became the first Japanese-born player to play in the major leagues after playing professionally in Japan.
