SUN BOWL : Third Time a Charm for Iowa, 38-18
There was no Rose Bowl repeat for Iowa this time.
After losing twice in Pasadena to Washington, the Hawkeyes got a measure of revenge Friday as they rolled to a 38-18 Sun Bowl victory over the Huskies.
“It was like we got the breaks, which we didn’t get in the two Rose Bowls against these people,” Iowa Coach Hayden Fry said.
The Huskies beat the Hawkeyes, 46-34, in the 1991 Rose Bowl and 28-0 in the 1982 game.
Iowa (8-4) opened the game with a three-and-out series. But the Huskies (7-4-1) fumbled the ensuing punt, giving the Hawkeyes possession on their own 42.
One play later, after a 58-yard run by bowl most valuable player Sedrick Shaw, they led, 7-0, and were on the way to scoring 21 consecutive first-half points.
The Hawkeyes rolled up 421 yards on the ground. Shaw finished with 135 yards, Tavian Banks ran for 122, and Michael Burger had two touchdowns.
