Obituaries : Violet Walker; Senior Tennis Champion
Violet Walker, 93, teacher and sportswoman who was a Senior Olympics tennis champion. Born in Renfrew, Scotland, Walker began teaching there and obtained a California teaching credential in 1924 after immigrating and studying at Occidental College in Glendale. She taught in the Los Angeles Unified School District for 43 years, principally at Thomas Starr King Junior High School. Actress Julie Newmar and other former pupils honored her with a 90th-birthday celebration three years ago. Walker was a ranked tennis player in California from the early 1930s until the late 1980s. She won the Senior Olympics in 1978. On Dec. 19 in Glendale.
