ALL ABOARD: Work has begun on Orange County’s newest train line. But it won’t help frazzled commuters much: its propane-fueled train is strictly for visitors to Irvine Regional Park. . . . Chugging at a leisurely 7 mph, the locomotive will visit Irvine Lake, a waterfall and other sights along its half a mile of track. “We wanted to capture the beauty of the park,” says John Ford, whose company is building the mini-train station. “And it’s a lot cheaper than taking the family to Disneyland.” The line should be open in April.

SPECIAL MISSION: Four architectural experts from the University of Pennsylvania have been called in to restore a crumbling house of worship at Mission San Juan Capistrano. This week, the team will begin assessing the 199-year-old building’s material needs. . . . Says mission administrator Jerry Miller: “The Great Stone Church is an important part of our heritage and we hope to save it from destruction. Unless we act now, there will be nothing left for future generations.”

ROAD SHOW: This is the 25th year that Chapman University music director John Koshak has hit the road with the university orchestra. “It’s still exciting,” he says. “Especially this year. This is one of the two or three best orchestras I’ve ever had.” The 45-piece orchestra leaves today for an eight-day tour in California and Nevada. Then on Jan. 17, members start a 12-day tour in Europe.
