Sweet Victory for Santa Clara, 3-1

Cande Ruiz scored three goals Thursday as the Santa Clara High girls’ soccer team defeated Calabasas, 3-1, in a Frontier League opener at Calabasas.

“Our preseason schedule has really gotten us ready for league play,” said Santa Clara Coach Bob Garcia, whose team faced powers Chaminade, Chatsworth, Royal and Louisville earlier in the season. “Our passing was great today and we got the ball to the players who need to get it in order for us to win.”

Stephanie Miranda made three saves for defending league champion Santa Clara (5-6).

Calabasas is 2-4-3

L.A. Baptist 3, Marshall 2--Lauren Ingram, Stephanie Barnhart and Jennifer Norris made goals and Amanda Sattler added two assists for the Knights (5-3, 2-0) in the Alpha League match at L.A. Baptist.

The Knights led, 3-0, before Marshall (4-5-1, 0-2-0) scored goals in the 77th and 78th minutes.

Ventura 2, San Marcos 1--Courtney Garmon and Sera Haycox each scored goals in the first half for the Cougars (8-3-3, 2-1-1) in the Channel League match at Ventura.

Quartz Hill 7, Antelope Valley 0--Melissa Montes scored three goals and Yvonne Ayala had two for the Rebels (5-2-2) in their Golden League opener at Antelope Valley.

Buena 5, Rio Mesa 0--Barb Almaraz had two goals and two assists and Melanie Montoya had two goals and one assist for the Bulldogs (7-2-2, 4-0-0) in the Channel League match at Buena.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Calabasas 5, Santa Clara 0--David Appel scored three goals as the Coyotes (8-5) recorded their third consecutive shutout in the Frontier League opener at Santa Clara.

The Saints are 3-5-2.

La Salle 8, Paraclete 0--Gabriel Aguirre scored the first of his three goals one minute into the match for the Lancers (11-2-1) in a nonleague victory at LaSalle.

Paraclete (4-7) had only four shots on goal.

WRESTLING

St. John Bosco 34, Harvard-Westlake 30--Pat Anderson (145 pounds), Matt Howard (189) and Brian Choi (215) all moved up a weight class and won their matches but the host Wolverines (9-5) dropped a Mission League opener to third-ranked St. John Bosco (12-1).
