QUAKING: The second anniversary of the Northridge earthquake on Wednesday will prompt memories of horror and heroism. It should also remind Angelenos of the need to prepare their homes for the next one. . . . In a Valley Briefing (B2), staff writer Julie Sheer describes the essentials: How to make a quake kit and how to batten down your home. One good idea: Cache extra prescription medicine.

STAYING ALIVE: The seizure of dozens of animals from an unsanitary kennel in Sun Valley finally had a happy chapter on Saturday. Twenty-three dogs and 21 cats taken from Mary Lou Rossignol last May were given homes during a special adoption day at a city animal shelter. . . . The kennel owner had picked up most of the animals as strays and felt she was doing them a favor. The city, and a jury, disagreed. Ten dogs and seven cats remain; they will be put to death if not claimed. Contact the North Central Shelter at (213) 485-5765.

SOBERING: For years, Tina Pasco has been one of many staffers at Mothers Against Drunk Drivers who turned a personal crusade into a public cause. But now, following year-end cutbacks at the Los Angeles chapter, she’s nearly alone. . . . That hasn’t prevented Pasco from aiding others. John Glionna chronicles her efforts at a time of waning public support (B1). “I couldn’t imagine being able to go through this terrible experience without Tina’s help,” said one DUI victim’s mother.

STICKING: Greg McElroy played offensive and defensive lineman at Grant High and Pierce College. Never played hockey. Can’t even skate. Yet with marketing skills and management elan, the West Hills resident has become president of the Ice Dogs, the Los Angeles entrant in hockey’s minor leagues. (C10). . . . McElroy left an executive post at the L.A. Kings, where he had the respect of Wayne Gretzky, to take the job. “Either I’m crazy or very ambitious,” McElroy says.
