Local and State Elections to Coincide for First Time

Share

For the first time in the city’s history, local elections will coincide with the statewide ballot this year.

Seal Beach was the only city in California to hold elections on the last Tuesday in March until the state Legislature voted in 1993 to move presidential primary elections from June to March, City Clerk Joanne M. Yeo said.

“They took our Tuesday,” said Yeo, whose name will not be on the ballot even though her term expires this year. She was recently reappointed by the City Council to another four-year term because no one challenged her for the position.

There are two open council seats on the city’s March 26 election ballot, but Councilman George Brown is the only incumbent running for reelection. Councilman Frank Laszlo cannot run again because of term limits.

The filing period for council elections closed Dec. 29.

Brown, 71, represents the eastern section of Leisure World, College Park West and a section of Rossmoor. He is being challenged by Jeff Christ, a 46-year-old narcotics detective for the Los Angeles Police Department.

Laszlo has endorsed Patty Campbell, a 54-year-old Seal Beach planning commissioner. Attorney Phillip Fife, 54, a former Seal Beach planning commissioner, is also a candidate for Laszlo’s seat.
