If you grew weary over the holidays of revisiting one legendary ‘60s band (via the Beatles’ “Anthology 1” album), here’s your chance to start off the new year by reliving some of the magic of one of the other celebrated bands from the era, the Doors.

Even if you already own “Dance on Fire,” “Live at the Hollywood Bowl” and “The Soft Parade” in videocassette form, this laser package, which combines all three, is a delight.

As expected, the picture and sound quality is so superior to that of the videocassettes that the familiar concert and promotional footage springs to life with a dynamic freshness.

More important, “The Doors Collection” contains audio commentary over the old videos and an hour of added material, including two of keyboardist Ray Manzarek’s UCLA student films (one featuring singer Jim Morrison during a party scene), excerpts from drummer John Densmore’s one-man play about the Doors and guitarist Robby Krieger’s new version of “The End.” In addition, photographer Henry Diltz shares memories and outtakes from the photo session for the “Morrison Hotel” album cover.

The real treat, however, is hearing the three surviving Doors reminisce on a separate audio track as they watch the “Dance,” “Bowl” and “Parade” videos with us--recalling events of the time with the living room informality of friends looking through a scrapbook.

The Doors were a band that changed the face of rock, but writers have often approached the group with such arty pretension that it was hard sometimes not to recoil. In the narratives here, however, Manzarek, Densmore and Krieger display some of the humor and warmth that accompanied--and gave life to--the experimentation and ambition all those years ago.
