New Dawn at the Box Office: The No. 1 spot at the weekend box office went to “From Dusk Till Dawn,” a horror film starring Harvey Keitel and “ER’s” George Clooney. The new release from Dimension Films took took in an estimated $10.2 million, according to early industry estimates. Hollywood Pictures’ “Mr. Holland’s Opus” starring Richard Dreyfuss was in second place its first weekend in wide release with $8.8 million. Universal’s “12 Monkeys,” No. 1 a week ago, dropped to third place with $6 million. Paramount’s “Eye for an Eye” came in fourth with $5.2 million, followed by Warner Bros.’ “Grumpier Old Men” with $4.8 million for fifth place.

Producers Guild Nominations: Nominees for the Producers Guild of America’s Darryl F. Zanuck Theatrical Motion Picture Producer of the Year Award are Brian Grazer (“Apollo 13”); Mario and Vittorio Cecchi Gorri and Gaetano Daniele (“The Postman”); Rob Reiner (“The American President”); Tim Robbins and John Kilik (“Dead Man Walking”); Lila Cazes and Annie Stewart (“Leaving Las Vegas”); Lindsay Doran (“Sense and Sensibility”), and Clint Eastwood and Kathleen Kennedy (“The Bridges of Madison County”). The winner, selected by the guild’s membership, will be announced March 6.

Spalding Gray in Film: Steven Soderbergh (“sex, lies and videotape”) will direct monologuist Spalding Gray in the Independent Film Channel’s first full-length feature film, a movie based on Gray’s one-man show, “Gray’s Anatomy.” The piece, which focuses on Gray’s middle-aged angst and physical ailments, including an eye problem that sends him on a journey in search of wellness, was performed for live audiences around the country in 1993. But Soderbergh and Gray will film “Gray’s Anatomy” without an audience. The movie begins production in Baton Rouge this month and will air on the network devoted to independent filmmaking next winter.

History for HBO: For fans wondering if Michael Jackson is singing the blues over his split from wife Lisa Marie Presley, they best not look to HBO. Despite the network’s announcement that the singer’s abruptly canceled December concert in New York would take place in the early part of this year, Jackson apparently had no plans to reschedule the event. HBO’s vice president of original programming, Chris Albrecht, told national television writers in Pasadena on Friday that Jackson is still recovering from the illness that forced the cancellation. Executives added that HBO lost several million dollars in the marketing and promotion of the event, but would still be happy to stage another concert if and when Jackson is willing.

UPN’s Fall Toons: The UPN network will expand its Sunday morning kids lineup this September with four new animated series, including one based on the movie “Jumanji.” “The Mouse & The Monster,” is also set for UPN Kids. Another show with the working title “B.A.D. (Bureau of Alien Destroyers)” will join the schedule as will “The Incredible Hulk.” sg,1.5

The KABC/KMPC Shuffle: KMPC-AM (710) announced that KABC-AM (790) talk-show host Bob Heckler is moving to KMPC beginning today. Heckler’s show will fill the slot left open after the show about sex and relationships hosted by husband-and-wife psychologists Leslie Pam and Ann Christie was canceled Friday. Operations manager Al Brady Law explained that the station is going for a more issue-oriented approach in the mid-morning time slot with Heckler’s show, which will air from 9 a.m.-noon. As a result of the changes, “The Peter Tilden Show With Tracey Miller” will move to 5:30-9 a.m. The station also announced that a show about food and travel featuring experts Norm Fox and David Goldman will be added to its Saturday lineup from 4-6 p.m. KABC will have a new sports show beginning tonight: Jim Gott, the former Dodger pitcher, will host a revised SportsTalk 790 weekdays from 7-9 p.m.

Make His Wedding Day?: Clint Eastwood is apparently engaged to anchorwoman Dina Ruiz, who works for KSBW-TV in Salinas. Ruiz told the Monterey County Herald on Friday that she could “reluctantly confirm” reports that they have a license to marry. But she said there is no wedding date. Ruiz, 30, and Eastwood, 65, have been seen in restaurants in and around Carmel for about a year.

Oh, Baby: Actress Marlee Matlin’s character on CBS’ “Picket Fences” gave birth on Friday night’s episode. Coincidentally, Matlin gave birth to a baby girl in real life on the same night. Matlin and husband Kevin Grandalski, a police officer, welcomed their first child, Sarah Rose Grandalski. The couple, both 30, have been married since August 1993. . . . Comedian Martin Lawrence and his wife, Patricia, welcomed their first child, daughter Jasmine Page, last Monday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
