At the suggestion of Councilman John Collins, the Police Department in the next few weeks will crack down on businesses that sell tobacco products to minors.

Collins said that police will establish a “decoy program” to ensure that businesses comply with the law that prohibits the sale of tobacco products to minors.

“We want to enforce the already passed state laws,” Collins said.

The program, Collins said, will include not only citing businesses that violate the law, but a “reward” to those that refuse to sell cigarettes to minors.

Certificates will be given to those businesses, Collins said, to thank them for “caring about the health of young people.”

Through the program, which is similar to what several other Orange County cities have done, “We want to eliminate cigarette sales to minors,” Collins said. “We can all work together to save lives.”
