KEYS, PLEASE: Next step for the nonprofit Vietnamese Community of Southern California, after its alcohol survey in Little Saigon: Doing something about residents’ main concern--drinking and driving. . . . But the solution has to be handled with care, leaders say. The plan is to convince the wives to find some way to take the car keys from husbands who drink too much. . . . “It has to be done in a culturally appropriate manner,” says Dr. Gregory Robinson of Cal State Fullerton’s social science research center, who is helping with the survey. “It’s heresy to Vietnamese women to be demanding with their husbands.”

MAGNIFICENT IDEA? Remember the movie, “Magnificent Obsession,” where Rock Hudson becomes a devoted doctor after blinding Jane Wyman in an auto accident? Someone who loves that movie has anonymously established a “Magnificent Obsession” scholarship fund at UC Irvine. . . . Recipients must declare they need the $2,500 scholarship to stay in school. But: They must also make a moral agreement to repay the scholarship twofold--a la Rock Hudson--once their careers take off.

TIPTOP TOES: Orange County native Miranda Weese has been promoted to principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, one of the nation’s preeminent troupes. . . . The 20-year-old took some of her first lessons with Shery Gilbert, owner of Mission Viejo’s Laguna Dance Theatre school. Gilbert says she saw something special in Weese: “She had a personality and a love for dance. I thought this kid was born to dance.”

ART FROM THE HEART: It may sound strange, but the Oklahoma City Zoo’s baby Mojo--the first gorilla ever diagnosed with leukemia--perks up at the sight of children’s artwork. So day-care youngsters at the federal building in Laguna Niguel plan to make him happy. With help from supportive UPS officials, they’re sending Mojo a batch of artwork on Thursday. . . . “We’ve got all kinds of crazy stuff,” says one teacher, Sherry Ratcliffe. “The kids are really enthused.”
