Rain Cuts Event to 54 Holes--at Most

Even though Saturday’s third round of the AT&T; Pebble Beach National Pro-Am was rained out, Jeff Maggert put a positive spin on it.

“No bogeys today,” he said.

PGA Tour and tournament officials delayed the start of the third round four hours before calling it off after steady rain made two of the three courses unplayable.

Two fairways at Spyglass Hill were under water and most of the tees were under water at Poppy Hills.

Weather permitting, 18 holes will be played today, making the event a 54-hole tournament and allowing it to become official, since players must be allowed to play all three courses.

Neither the results nor the prize money would count if it is not an official event.

David Eger of the PGA Tour said both the sponsor and the tour are prepared to play Monday if necessary to make it official.

Maggert, at eight-under-par 136, holds the 36-hole lead by one shot over Davis Love III, Loren Roberts and Steve Jones. Two shots behind are Phil Mickelson, Tom Watson, Nick Faldo, Jay Haas, Jim McGovern, Howard Clark and John Elliott.

“I’m not really thinking about the weather,” said Maggert, who is scheduled to play at Spyglass today. “I’m gearing myself toward playing again [today] and having a chance to win.”

The last time the AT&T; was shortened to 54 holes was in 1986, when Fuzzy Zoeller defeated Payne Stewart by five shots.
